While the use of virtualization technology can help data centers quickly add computing capacity and respond to user requests, it is not without its share of management challenges. Unlike physical servers, virtual machines are often overlooked, are easily relocated around the datacenter and can radically change the data center topology as machines are started and stopped. Without the proper controls in place, virtual server sprawl, unmanageable resource contention, compliance headaches, and hardware cost savings are easily outweighed by the additional IT personnel required to manage the technology.
Powered by the iWave Orchestrator platform, DSP handles the automated routing of authorizations, provisioning of the server, execution of server build checklist tasks (e.g. network configuration, system / application configuration, credentials), assigning of storage resources and notification of the administrator.
Dynamic Server Provisioning also provides the tight integration with existing IT Service Management processes; therefore, when a new server is provisioned a CI would be automatically entered into the CMDB and added as a monitored endpoint in the Event Management tool. DSP can be initiated either by the end-user via a self service portal or automatically triggered by other mechanisms such as a change request generated by the service desk.
